AN OPPORTUNITY FOR SPORTS SCIENCE RESEARCH
In October 2015, one of the most ambitious polar expeditions ever will attempt the first water to water crossing of Antarctica via the South Pole on foot – SHACKLETON 2015 LIVE!
The Anglo-Irish Expedition will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s 1915 Imperial Trans-Antarctica Expedition, which whilst failing to complete the planned route, became famous as one of the greatest leadership, endurance and survival stories of all time, with all crew of Endurance, the expedition’s ship, being saved!
There are many opportunities for the sports science world to get involved with SHACKLETON 2015 LIVE! The team is looking to partner with expert advisors and Universities covering nutrition, sleep, psychology and physiology as well as Official Partners to integrate with the Expedition.
SHACKLETON 2015 LIVE!’s mission is to undertake research into how extreme energy use affects the human body and how scientists from different sectors can learn from this whether they are sports scientists or scientists at the frontline researching Energy Impairment Diseases too help find effective treatments and cures
Exactly 100 years to the day, the four strong team of Tom Lehane (56), Newall Hunter (52), Stew Edge (36) and Harriet Coppock (36) will pick up where Shackleton left off… reviving the spirit of the Endurance and attempting to complete his crossing of Antarctica from the Weddell Sea to the Ross Sea via the South Pole.

As well as sports science there are many reasons to get involved, including:
BROADCAST – the 1,800 mile, 90 Day trek will be watched via live streamed footage broadcast daily from Antarctica through the Expedition website & social networks.
Sustainability – SHACKLETON 2015 LIVE!’s mission is to promote the cultural, economic and political shift for one planet living and educate the public to discover and learn about eco-stability. The Expedition is a global communications platform designed to drive awareness of the climate change issues facing everyone. Coinciding with the Paris 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in December – 2015, the team will reach the South Pole during the conference!
