The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s Outstation in Hamburg offers an international and stimulating environment for structural molecular biology research. It operates three highly brilliant synchrotron beamlines for protein crystallography and SAXS. An important aspect is the preparation and characterization of macromolecular samples for structural studies. The Sample Preparation and Characterization (SPC) facility allows visitors to purify and condition their samples and to apply quality assessments to obtain the most optimal conditions for structural characterization. The facility includes a large high-throughput crystallization facility and a wide array of instruments for biophysical characterization. The postholder will be trained to operate and maintain the equipment, and will participate in the development of new purification and characterization techniques. The successful applicant is expected to provide day-to-day support to the EMBL and international user community that will use the facility for both routine and more experimental services.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have a bachelor degree in a relevant field (biology, chemistry or related disciplines). Working experience in molecular biology is required. Previous experience in the use of biophysical instrumentation will be considered advantageous. Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with other research teams is essential. Good knowledge of desktop software applications and fluency in English is mandatory, German language skills are desirable.
Please apply online through www.embl.org/jobs An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review. EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation. Please note that EMBL does not return CVs or attached documents to applicants.
