Job Description
Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Farm Research Campus (Janelia) is a world-class research community in Ashburn, VA. Janelia is a uniquely supportive campus environment with a combination of facilities, equipment, and leaders in the fields of Neurobiology, Physics, Electron Microscopy, and Scientific Computing enabling us to take on multidisciplinary high-risk, high-reward research projects.
We have a challenging opportunity of developing complete, three dimensional models of brains and neural systems at high resolution which will serve as the basis for future projects in correlating brain structure with function, and dealing with increasingly complex model neural systems.
An exciting opportunity exists for a full-time research technician (temp to hire) to contribute to Janelia’s FlyEM Project by confirming, verifying and modifying, as needed, the identification of neurons and other structures in large series of electron microscopic images, working at a computer workstation. The research technician will be responsible for annotating, proofreading and editing electron microscopic images processed by the FlyEM reconstruction pipeline. Candidates will receive training in basic neurobiological concepts, including cellular structure at the electron microscopic level, and the use of computer-based image analysis tools.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
- Ability to visualize complex, three dimensional structures required
- Experience interacting with computer-based two- and three-dimensional image representations a plus
- Experience with image processing software a plus
- Experience interpreting light and/or electron microscopic images a plus
- Experience with Linux operating system and/or Python programming language a plus
- Experience working with databases and/or interacting with software developers a plus
- Ability to perform detailed, repetitive protocols at a computer workstation required
- Ability to concentrate in a computer laboratory environment with multiple workstations and users required
- Attitude and capacity to be a good team player and work well independently required
- Good color vision required
