RICE Reader in, or Professor of, Geriatric Medicine or Old Age Psychiatry
Location: RICE – The Research Institute for the Care of Older People, Bath
If your ambition is to push at the frontiers of knowledge and to help improve life for people with dementia and related problems, we can make sure the work you do will never be forgotten. At the University of Bristol we’ve been working with RICE and RUH – the Royal United Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to create a new role and an exciting opportunity to join one of the UK’s leading memory clinics in its own purpose-built clinical and research centre in Bath. You will be instrumental in taking the research and clinical programme to a new level in the coming years. This is your chance to embark on an unforgettable career experience while helping in the battle to make dementia a distant memory.
About us
Since 1987, RICE has been running its pioneering memory clinic in Bath, and since 2008 has been based in its own centre at the Royal United Hospital. The RUH’s ambition is to be the number one dementia friendly trust in the country. RICE and the RUH have now come together with the University of Bristol which is recognised for its research and academic excellence, to build on existing strengths and to develop a centre of dementia excellence in the South West of England with a global impact.
Your role
This is an incredible opportunity for a clinical researcher with an excellent track record of high quality research in the field of Geriatric Medicine or Old Age Psychiatry. You’ll help to strengthen our programme of clinical research in the area of cognitive impairment and related conditions such as movement disorders in collaboration with University, NHS and other colleagues, nationally and internationally.
As part of your role you’ll be expected to develop a programme of original research in dementia and related conditions. As well as contributing to the research strategy of the School, Faculty and RICE, you’ll also be expected to promote the reputation and impact of your own work, present work at international conferences, and publish in high impact journals. You will also have a clinical role at the RUH within the Older Persons’ Unit.
Our future including the continued success of these research projects depends entirely on the next generation of talent emerging from our own ranks, which is why you’ll be expected to take some part in the teaching of undergraduate medical students, and likewise with the education and training of postgraduate students.
Our requirements
To be up to the challenge we’ll expect you to possess an abundance of skills, qualities and qualifications. But there are some we look out for in particular. We are looking for someone with energy, passion and focus who can really make a difference. You’ll need to have clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Geriatric Medicine or Psychiatry.
Your ability to offer expert clinical opinion in the field of Dementia and Geriatric Medicine or Old Age Psychiatry, and taking full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients will be essential to your success. Your experience in running memory clinics and expertise in assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with all types of dementia will be just as important.
Your other skills should also include the ability to actively contribute to continuous improvement in Older People’s services; the ability to manage and lead memory clinic and research teams at RICE; and clear application of audit in clinical practice.
