Project Outline

Applications are invited for an EPSRC-funded PhD studentship in the general area of bioorganic chemistry. The studentship is aimed at combining synthetic chemistry with protein science to develop new synthetic reactions and biomaterials.

The student will join a growing team of multidisciplinary researchers from a range of backgrounds from chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy and materials engineering. The research group is based at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology ( and offers state-of-the-art laboratories, instrumentation and facilities.

The successful candidate will have a background in chemistry (or relevant related discipline) and have an interest in any of the following areas: synthetic chemistry, biochemistry, biomaterials, biocatalysis.


Eligible candidates should have, or expect to obtain, a minimum of an upper second class UK undergraduate (or equivalent) and meet the relevant English language requirements.

Funding Details

The studentship is fully funded for UK/EU citizens (EU citizens subject to residence conditions). The funding covers tuition fees and a stipend for 3.5 years (£14057p.a. in 2015/16). 

International students are welcome to apply on a self-funded basis (if recipient of external scholarships covering the full costs). High calibre candidates of any origin will be considered for a President’s Doctoral Scholarship.
