Head of the European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS)


Job Description

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).

EMBL is seeking a qualified scientist with extensive and long-standing experience in science education and communication to lead the operation and further development of the European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS). ELLS is EMBL’s science education facility bringing secondary school teachers in contact with the institute’s scientific environment, fostering mutual exchange between high school teachers, students, the general public and EMBL scientists. ELLS operates from the EMBL Headquarter in Heidelberg, Germany, and collaborates with the other EMBL Outstations (Grenoble, Hamburg, Hinxton, Monterotondo).

The Head of ELLS reports to the Director International Relations.

Responsibilities of the post holder will include:
• Management and coordination of ELLS
• Supervision of ELLS team members
• Management of the ELLS budget and of external grants
• Developing practical workshops and online training formats for high school biology teachers according to availability and needs
• Recruiting interested EMBL and external scientists as tutors for workshops
• Training visiting scientists/teachers to develop and conduct similar workshops
• Development of innovative strategies for ELLS, according to the longterm objectives
• Fostering internal relations between ELLS and other EMBL training and communication activities
• Coordination of the internal and external promotion and publicity of ELLS in agreement with EMBL´s general missions
• Coordination of the planning and implementation of ELLS activities in Heidelberg, the EMBL Outstations and other institutions in Europe
• Development of ELLS resource kits and training materials
• Conception and development of e-learning resources
• Networking with European and international experts in Science Education
• Developing ELLS activities geared to engage the general public to experience EMBL research
• Engage with schools and the public, create exhibits, interactives & events
• Participating in securing external funding for ELLS activities

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate should have a scientific background in molecular biology and should hold a PhD.

The successful candidate for this appointment will have at least 6-8 years of proven experience in science education, science communication and media development including staff supervision and extensive grant and budget management experience within an international organisation.

Qualification and broad experience in e-learning, media didactics and e-learning project management is required. Practical experience in web development, web design and server administration is highly desirable. A solid background in delivering face-to-face training as well as facilitating online training formats is required.  

Good interpersonal and communication skills are indispensable for this position. Candidates should be multilingual (English, as the working language, is mandatory. Advanced knowledge of German and French is essential).

The candidate should have established an extensive network to European school communities and stakeholders in the area of science education and communication.

Excellent organisational skills, the ability to work independently and the willingness to raise external funding are also required. This position will require some travel.
