The appointment will be on UCL Grade 8. The salary range will be £41,844 – £49,362 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.
The Cruciform Teaching Facility Unit (CTFU) at UCL provides undergraduate teaching laboratory space and practical lessons in biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, microbiology, anatomy and pharmacology, primarily for the Division of Biosciences and the Medical School at UCL. The unit has ten members of staff, including two laboratory managers, and consists of five laboratories, three “wet” and two “dry” serving over 1200 students for more than 1000 hours per year. We are looking for a manager to lead the CTFU and allow it to continue to provide excellent teaching services and enhance the student experience of laboratory-based learning. This includes the day-to-day management of the team to ensure the efficient and safe running of the CTFU. As well as leading by example, you will be responsible for co-ordinating teaching events via consultation with academic staff, utilising the CMIS timetabling system. You will be first point-of-contact for the unit and therefore must be an excellent communicator, happy to interface with your staff, students and senior college members. You will also represent the unit on various committees, and must be prepared to be proactive in putting forward the case for the unit. You will be responsible for formulating, running and espousing the CTFU budget including the planning and rolling replacement of IT, laboratory and AV equipment.
You should be conversant with a reasonable percentage of the science taught, and therefore we are looking for someone with a BSc (Life Science subject), HND (Life Science subject) or equivalent. You must have substantial relevant managerial experience of a team within a higher education laboratory; experience of working in a teaching environment and familiarity with the workings of higher education are desirable. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to demonstrate effective leadership of a team. You will also be able to work effectively under pressure in an environment that is sometimes prone to rapid change, demonstrating an ability to react positively and effectively.
